Monday comment: I'm not in the comp but I went for a flight after them. It was marginal when the sun came out and then thunderstorms formed in checkerboard pattern. The ones I saw go were only mid-mountain height. I'm not sure if the day was valid (it was). The weather today is turning stormy too and the outlook is bad tomorrow. The weather should be good again wednesday to friday. But some of these guys are so good, they may have done good anyway. - Serge.

Tuesday: The weather was bad initially but it all cleared in the afternoon. The task called was Parson and back again. I went up hill late and caught the last to take off. It was windy though so the return part must have been much harder to do. I don't have any results tonight but here are a couple of photos. Climb was easy as the start. The forecast has improved and may be good until sunday. A valid task is likely every day from now.

Wednesday: I took more photos and have the results so far as bonus. See photo. The first five are: Brett, Jeff, Jim, Ross, Jon. Today is more cloudy than sunny but the wind is light. They did not decide a task yet so it's likely to be short and difficult.
So today, the task was Parson and back again. It looked like it was going to be super and then comes a cloud layer to shut the thermals down. At mount 7 first, then the range south. Brett says he scratched from low in the shade at Tower peak to be able to come back. And you guessed it, Brett won the day. Not clear yet who is second. Doug or Jon.

Thursday: Bad weather so far. Unlikely to clear up for a task. Mark Dowsett posted the results with animated paths and all on his website (link outdated). Gotta love these animated paths. Very graphic. Mark Dowsett blog. Terry Ryan from Toronto also has a nice touristic blog about it.

Friday: Morning clouds were looking ominous but stable air came to calm the whole thing. The wind precluded an out and return so the goal was Invermere. I arrived after all were in the air and took off after 6:30. The wind chopped thermals and I somehow could not climb above 10000 feet. Thermals were in usual spots though. I heard later that four made goal.

Saturday: For this beautiful and last day of the comp, the task had a fun twist. First go to Harrogate (45 km) then back to Parson (add 10 km) then back to Harrogate before returning to Nicholson. Light wind and good thermals made it really fun. Ten made goal. I went cross country myself and met most participants on their return leg between 8000 feet and 10000 feet altitude. A nice dinner at a high end country restaurant followed by prizes and trophies around a big fires finished the night. St-Jean baptist fireworks have embellished the prizes presentation.

Commentaire de Lundi: Je ne suis pas dans la compète mais je suis allé voler après eux. C'était marginal quand le soleil est sorti et des orages se sont formés en échiquier. Ceux que j'ai vu partir n'étaient qu'à mi-montagne de hauteur. Je ne sais pas si la manche est valide (elle l'était). Le temps est aux orages aujourd'hui aussi et semble mauvais pour demain. le temps devrait s'améliorer mercredi à vendredi. Mais certains de ces gars sont si bons, ils peuvent avoir un bon vol quand même. - Serge.

Mardi: Le temps était mauvais mais s'est dégagé en apres-midi. L'épreuve est encore Parson aller-retour. Je suis allé au décollage pour prendre les derniers qui partaient. C'était venteux alors le retour a dû être difficile. Je n'ai pas les résultats ce soir mais voici une couple de photos. Monter était facile au départ.

Mercredi: Plus de photos et les résultats en prime. Voir photo. Les cinq premiers sont: Brett, Jeff, Jim, Ross, Jon. Aujourd'hui est plus nuageux qu'ensoleillé mais le vent est léger. Ils n'ont pas encore décidé d'une épreuve mais ce sera probablement court et difficile.
Alors aujourd'hui, l'épreuve est encore Parson aller-retour. Ca semblait voulair devenir super et voilà une couche de nuages qui éteint les thermiques. Au mont 7 en premier, puis sur la chaîne au sud. Brett dit qu'il a gratté de bas dans l'ombre au sommet Tower pour pouvoir revenir. Brett remporte la journée évidemment. Pas sûr qui est second. Doug ou Jon.

Jeudi: Mauvais temps. Peu probable que ca se dégage pour une épreuve. Mark Dowsett vient tout juste d'afficher les résultats avec trajectoires animées et tout sur son site internet (lien périmé). Ces trajectoires animées sont à ne pas manquer. Très vivant. Mark et Terry ont leurs propres blogs en anglais. Voir les liens du côté anglais.

Vendredi: Les nuages du matin étaient menaçants mais de l'air stable est venu pour calmer le tout. Le vent empêchant les allers-retours, le but était Invermere. Je suis arrivé après que tous soient en vol et j'ai décollé après 18:30. Le vent hachait les thermiques et je ne pouvais pas monter à plus de 10 000 pieds. Les thermiques étaient aux endroits normaux, quand même. On m'a dit plus tard que quatre ont fait le but.

Samedi: En cette dernière et superbe dernière journée de compétition, l'épreuve avait un zigzag. D'abord aller à Harrogate (45 km) revenir ensuite à Parson (ajouter 10 km) puis retourner à Harrogate avant de revenir à Nicholson. Une épreuve très plaisante dans le vent léger et les bons thermiques. Dix ont fait le but. Je suis allé en distance moi-même et ai rencontré la plupart des participants sur leur dernière étape entre 8000 pieds 10 000 pieds d'altitude. Un bon souper à un restaurant de campagne de classe suivi de prix et trophées autour d'un grand feu ont terminé la soirée. De beaux feux d'artifices pour la St-Jean baptiste ont agrémenté la remise des prix.
